Need for Speed: The Run is a racing video game and the eighteenth title in the Need for Speed series. Published by Electronic Arts, it was released on November 15, 2011, with multiple versions - EA Black Box developed versions for PlayStation 3, Windows, and Xbox 360; Firebrand Games developed versions for the 3DS, and Wii. An iOS version was planned to be developed by EA Mobile, but it was eventually cancelled. The game focuses on point-to-point races involving overtaking opponents, defeating rivals, time attacks, and evading the efforts of both police and criminal gang members to stop them.


Unlike previous entries in the series, The Run features an extensive collection of races set against real-life locations, including the cities of New York, Chicago, Las Vegas, and San Francisco, and features a wide variety of real-life cars to drive in. The game's career mode sees players assume the role of street racer taking part in a large-scale race from San Francisco to New York and seeking to win it against various odds. While the game received extensive marketing and heavy promotion from its developers, it received mixed reviews from critics following its release.

Gameplay:

Need for Speed: The Run is a racing video game and the eighteenth title in the Need for Speed series. Players take part in street racing across real world locations in the United States.[4] There are over 300 kilometres (190 mi) of road, three times more than Hot Pursuit, making it the biggest Need For Speed game on release.[5] Most event types require the player to overtake opponents to win the race. There are also time attack events and survival events where the players must prevent their vehicle from being destroyed while under attack. Cars are divided into tiers based on performance. During a race, the player can enter a gas station to change the vehicle they are using and make visual customisations. Unlike previous Need for Speed titles, The Run features sections where the player exits their car and is travelling on foot. Gameplay in these sections is restricted to quick time events.[5]

The driving model of the game is described as "sit somewhere between Shift and Hot Pursuit", not as arcade-styled as Hot Pursuit, but neither as simulator-styled as Shift. The Run employs a large range of real-world vehicles, seemingly taking in the usual mix of muscle cars, street racers and refined exotics, described as "each car presents a different driving challenge for the player".[5][6] Exclusively digitized for the game is the 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S and the Pagani Huayra.[7][8] The damage system is similar to that seen in Hot Pursuit.[9] The cars can be altered with performance upgrades and visual upgrades, such as paint colors and body kits. There are cosmetic body kits known as Style Pack kits and Aero Pack kits, which affect aerodynamics as well as performance.

An experience points (XP) system is used for unlocking cars and events in multiplayer and Challenge Series races. The game also feature a Rewind option that allows the player to restart an event to their last checkpoint if they wreck their vehicle or to rewind their vehicle from a collision or missed opportunity. Rewinds are only available in limited quantities as their amount depends on the difficulty level that the player has selected; Easy has 10 Rewinds, Normal has 5 Rewinds, Hard has 3 Rewinds, and Extreme has 1 Rewind, as well as the most difficult AI opponents.[10]

The player can select an event and vote towards the race course where the multiplayer game should be taking place on. Players also take part in a reward system known as "The Bonus Wheel", which randomly selects a reward and required goal criteria for it.[12][13]

Wii and 3DS versions:

The game is similar to Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit. Players race down freeways until they meet a police car. The police then try to chase them down and wreck their car. They also encounter other objectives such as a straight-up race. There is another mode where players 'duel' a rival. They can also race to toll booths that double as checkpoints.[1]


The 3DS version also features Autolog, which is integrated throughout the career mode and uses 40 in-game challenges scattered throughout the campaign. The game also takes advantage of StreetPass, letting players upload their best Autolog scores to other Nintendo 3DS devices. In multiplayer, the game features a straight race mode where eight people compete. There is also a four-on-four Cops vs. Racers mode. The game supports Wi-Fi and local wireless connections.[1] However, the Wii version lacks online play, yet it has split-screen multiplayer.

Need for Speed: World (previously known as Need for Speed: World Online) was the fifteenth installment in the racing video game Need for Speed franchise published by Electronic Arts. It was co-developed by EA Black Box (rebranded Quicklime Games before closing in 2013) and EA Singapore. It was the first freemium massively multiplayer online racing game in the Need for Speed series and was available on Microsoft Windows. The world was released worldwide on July 27, 2010. However, people who ordered a "Starter Pack" had an early "head-start" in the game, which started on July 20, 2010.[1][2]


Need for Speed: World, along with other EA free-to-play titles Battlefield Heroes, Battlefield Play4Free, and FIFA World, went offline on July 14, 2015.

Gameplay:

World took on the gameplay style of 2005's Most Wanted and 2006's Carbon, focusing on illegal street racing, tuning and police chases, and added some elements to the game such as "power-ups" (somewhat similar to Mario Kart). World was set in a fictional city which combined the cities of Rockport from Most Wanted and Palmont from Carbon into its map design, with redesigned graphics and new locations added to the map to connect the two cities. The game featured over 100 licensed cars consisting of tuners, muscle cars, exotics, race cars, and SUVs. Manufactures ranged from Alfa Romeo to Volkswagen and there were over thirty manufacturers in the game.

Before September 8, 2010, after reaching level 10 and access to only first-tier and some second-tier cars, the player would not be able to progress further in the game and would cease to earn any more experience points or cash. To continue the game, the player had to purchase a "Starter Pack". Without it, the player was allowed to play the game for as long as he or she wants, but they would cease to earn experience and cash.[3] [4] On September 8, 2010, World passed one million registrations. To celebrate that, the game was made completely free-to-play and the level cap was removed.[5]

Performance upgrades and skills

In the initial release version 4 (July 20, 2010), car performance could be improved via street or pro upgrade kits (purchased with in-game cash), depending on the car. Some cars only had street upgrade kits as an option, and the fastest car in the game at the time, the BMW M3 GTR, did not have any upgrade kits. The game also had "driver skills", 3 of which directly improved performance (acceleration, handling, top speed) and applied to any car that a player was driving. The skills unlocked as a player leveled up and a player could select up to 49 of 81 possible skills.[6] Once a skill was chosen, it couldn't be undone, and players would have to start with a new driver or account and level up again in order to choose a different set of skills. In November 2010, with version 5, the upgrade kits were removed and replaced by performance parts, each car has its own set of performance parts.[7] In May of 2012, "driver skills" were removed from the game and replaced with skill mods, each car has its own set of skill mods.[8] There were no performance skill mods to replace the acceleration, handling, and top speed skills, so the cars ended up being slower. The lowest rated parts or skill mods could be directly purchased for free using in-game "cash", but higher-rated parts or skill mods could only be won by chance from card packs, either free "lucky draw" card packs rewarded at the end of any event, or card packs purchased with real money converted into the games microtransaction currency called "speed boost".

Visual aftermarket parts

On March 16, 2011, visual aftermarket parts were made available and later added to lucky draw in December 2011. All the in-game cash body kits from previous versions were removed. Most body kits required SpeedBoost to purchase on May 31, 2011.

Night Mode

In December 2010, night mode was added to the game. This required adjusting the night mode lighting via a brighter moon, as the part of the map that came from Most Wanted had light posts that could be knocked down by a players car. Since Carbon was a night mode game, almost all light posts were located so that players cars could not knock them down, so this was only an issue for the Most Wanted part of the map.

Holiday Themes

In September 2010, an Oktoberfest theme was added to the game in the form of decorations to parts of the map. In December 2010, a Christmas theme was added to the game and included snow and hills added to the golf course. For New Years, the game would go into night mode for 24 to 48 hours (depending on the year), with fireworks at some spots in the map.

Team Escape Mode

On March 31, 2011, Electronic Arts introduced a new game mode called Team Escape, a semi-cooperative version of a police pursuit where up to four players participated in a sprint from point A to point B while avoiding numerous cops, within a set time limit depending on the event. For this mode, two team versions of the game's power-ups were released.

Treasure Hunt Mode

On July 26, 2011, a feature called Treasure Hunt was released. In Treasure Hunt, played during free roam, players would attempt to collect fifteen gems located in various areas. If the player collected all fifteen gems daily, they would get boosts of reputation and in-game cash. Playing the Treasure Hunt mode daily would build up what was known as a Treasure Hunt Streak. Players earned random high-end performance parts or additional power-ups after completing every hunt based on the day count of the streak (for example, if the player completed Treasure Hunt for twelve days in a row, they would receive a random tier 1 pro performance part). Players doing treasure hunts were unintentionally getting into pursuits since ramming a police car while in free roam triggered a pursuit, so on November 16, 2011, police vehicles were removed from free roam in World. Players were no longer able to start pursuits by ramming police vehicles; police chases were only possible by joining Pursuit Outrun or Team Escape events.

Drag Mode

On October 16, 2012, drag racing was introduced to World. This mode allowed players to race other players to the finish line in various strips of straight roads. Players would need to use a manual transmission and shift their way to the finish. The automatic transmission was also available to the players. Single-player mode was also made available with in-game traffic.

Achievement Mode

On April 10, 2013, an opportunity to win valuable in-game rewards by completing various achievements was introduced.[9] The old player achievement system that only showed a players stats was dropped, and replaced with the milestone-based achievement reward mode.

This aggravated the pre-existing and largely ignored the problem of cheating in the game. Prior to this, client-side cheat detection could be defeated by game hacks, so some server-side cheat detection was added, but due to being prone for false detection of a cheat, a "detected" cheat just meant there were no post-event rewards. The existence of the problem was finally acknowledged by a Community Manager on April 15, 2013.[10] However, Quicklime Games, which was in charge of game development, maintenance and updates, was shut down on April 25, 2013, so virtually nothing was done to improve cheat detection, and instead the focus was to ban players "caught" cheating with the existing cheat detects, but this resulted in innocent players getting banned, which put a burden on EA support to undo unfair bans.

Gameplay:

Need for Speed Rivals is a racing game and features gameplay similar to earlier Need for Speed titles, such as Need for Speed: Most Wanted and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit.[5] Players take on the role of a Racer or Cop, with each side of the law offering its own play style.[6] Rivals feature eleven upgradeable gadgets such as EMPs, shockwaves, spike strips, and the ability to call in roadblocks.[5] The game takes place in a fictional location known as Redview County.[7] The open-world environment features a similar set-up to Most Wanted, with several jumps, speed traps, and unlockable cars, as well as shortcuts that are not shown on the map.[8][9]


Rivals feature a career progression system for both Cop and Racer.[10] Progression is made by means of Speedlists for Racer and Assignments for Cop, which are sets of objectives which involve dangerous driving, maneuvers, and race standings. When the player completes a set of objectives, the player levels up and unlocks new content, and is presented with another set of objectives to choose from.[11]

Gameplay:

The first gameplay footage of the pre-alpha build for Need for Speed was revealed at EA's press conference at E3 on June 15, 2015. The E3 presentation shows a part of the story, followed by the customization of a Subaru BRZ which showed the new and improved customization system, and the 'action camera' which was later revealed to be one of the five different camera angles. There are five different gameplay types: Speed, Style, Crew, Build, and Outlaw where players can earn points for engaging into progress in the game through five overlapping storylines. Need for Speed takes place in the fictional city of Ventura Bay and its surroundings which is based on Los Angeles.[3][4][5]


Need for Speed has a redesigned 'Wrap Editor', and body modifications return to the series after nearly five years. The game features real-life tuning companies including RAUH-Welt Begriff, SEIBON, and RTR Mustang. A new 'Handling Slider' was exhibited in the E3 gameplay video, which combines the best elements of the earlier Black Box titles' grippy tires, as well as the drift style of the newer Criterion titles.

Developed by EA Canada, Rovio Mobile, and EA Black Box, and published by Electronic Arts, it was released on October 30, 2006, for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, Windows and Mac OS X and in 2008 for arcades. The game sees players conducting illegal street races within the fictional city of Palmont City, with the game's main story taking place after the events of Need for Speed: Most Wanted and focusing on the player's character taking control of the city from various street-racing gangs. While the gameplay is similar to its predecessor, Carbon introduced a number of new features, including crews and racing wingmen, Tōge-styled racing events, and greater customization options.


Alongside console, home computer, and arcade versions, the game also received portable editions for the PlayStation Portable, Nintendo DS, Game Boy Advance,[2] Zeebo,[3] entitled Need for Speed: Carbon – Own the City. In the game, players take part in illegal street races that focus on different styles of races, utilizing a variety of licensed real-world cars (available at the time of the game's development and release) that can be upgraded and customized with new parts, while contending with the involvement of the police in their efforts to impede the player. Racing Events focus on competitive races with other drivers on circuits or point-to-point routes, checkpoint races, and races involving sprints or drifting (the latter being absent in its predecessor), with players able to use Nitrous Oxide and Speedbreaker whenever needed - either to help win races or get out of tight spots - both of which recharge over time. The game itself features four game modes - Career, Quick Race, Challenge Series, and Multiplayer - with the latter featuring online gameplay available in all console and PC versions of the game, except the Wii's edition.


The game operates on the same gameplay mechanics used in previous entries in the series, including its predecessor Most Wanted, though Carbon introduced new elements. A new element exclusive to Carbon are Canyon events - special racing events styled after Japanese Tōge racing, in which player compete in competitive racing on canyon roads outside the game's main setting. These events consist of sprints, drifting and duel events, in which the latter two feature a majority of destructible guardrails that the player must avoid crashing through or risk losing these respective events as a result. Duel events on these circuits operate differently to events involving major rival racers in Need for Speed games, as these are conducted across two stages on a canyon circuit - in each stage, one driver acts as the chaser and pursues the other at close proximity, with the first stage seeing the player as the chaser and scoring points the closer they can tail their opponent, while in the second stage their opponent becomes the chaser and the player must keep as much distance as possible to avoid losing too many points before the stage is completed. At the end of both stages the car who took the lead wins if their score is positive, otherwise their opponent wins if they turned it negative. Apart from scores, an instant win is possible depending on which mode the Duel is conducted in - in Career mode, the player can win instantly if they can stay ahead of their opponent for ten seconds, but lose if they fall behind for too long; in Online Multiplayer, a player wins if their opponent crashes through a guardrail.

Police pursuits, a staple of the series, function similar to Most Wanted in that police can turn up at any time during a race and attempt to impede the player during the event, except in Canyon Race events and checkpoint races; in Career mode, the police can also turn up during Free Roam, but will not act against the player unless they have a warrant (for evading a previous pursuit) or committed an offence in their sight, whereupon they focus on blocking in and arresting the player unless they can lose them and find a safe spot to hide until they lose their heat. As the player is pursued, they can either attempt to evade the cops, or knock them out of action by ramming their cars or using destructible props called Pursuit Breakers to impede their pursuit, though extensive pursuits will cause the player's heat level to rise, leading to stronger pursuit tactics including spike-strips, road blocks, and the involvement of state/federal authorities. Carbon modified the pursuit function by making police less dominant in arrest tactics at higher heat levels, and reducing the chance a Pursuit Breaker blocks/destroys a pursuing vehicle.

Licensed real-world cars used in the game are divided into three tiers (performance level) and three classes - Exotic, Tuner, and Muscle. For example a Nissan 240SX is a tier 1 tuner car, while a Corvette Z06 is a tier 3 muscle car. Cars receive visual damage during the game, but no physical damage. Cars can be upgraded in performance through new components and fine-tuning of each component - such upgrades can help, for example, to improve speed, or improve braking. Carbon added the ability to customize visual parts via autosculpt parts, which allow adjustments of components for example, while adding flexibility with vinyls and decals by allowing them to be placed in layers over each other, with the ability to modify these in shape and size, and place them anywhere on the car. Additional cars and customization parts can be acquired through completing Reward Cards - each card consists of a set of challenges for the player to complete across the game modes, and reward the player either with a new vehicle to use or new parts for customization.
